Summer Food Program Kickoff at Chisholm Trail Elementary

Summer Food Program Kickoff at Chisholm Trail Elementary

The meal program started many, many
years ago- probably 15 or 20 or more. We use this opportunity to
serve children in the community that may or may not have access to food
at home the way we do. Traditionally, about 4,500 for lunch
in the month of June- we’re hoping that that number increases
substantially this year. Anyone’s eligible, just come on in and Eat.
[Col. Corn Mascot] “Just eating? Cool. Is this where you guys go to
school?” [child] No. [David Paul] We have some closed sites, but in our
open sites that they’re just open to the community- up to 18 years old.
Today we have an example of our PB&J jamwich, and that comes with a
luscious cheese stick, and also they’ll get fruits and vegetables
and some extra added grains in the form of a Sunchip original today.
Sergeant Pepper here has our Pizza Buildable, which includes a
flatbread with some cheese and some tomato sauce, and he as well has his
additional grains and fruits and vegetables. [Mother] Ok, this is
peanut butter and jelly. It’s really good, it’s got- ooh look! What shape
is it? Oop! Kenna… [David Paul] During the school year, I mean it’s
a building block to help kids, you know, achieve their best potential
in the classroom, and so they can dream believe and achieve. I think
it’s important because there may be kids that don’t have access to food
the way others might. We’re just trying to increase access to
healthy, nutritious foods- and you know, help out families. We usually
have a kickoff and we’ll do various events throughout the course of the
summer. We’ve got a couple ice cream socials Planned, so we partner with
our milk vendor Highland Dairy and they provide ice cream at some of
our sites. This year we have 42 open sites. No application, no
reservation, no “your table is ready,” just come on in and eat. We
serve breakfast and lunch at almost all of our sites. We do have four
sites however that serve lunch and snack. So we can’t serve all three
meals at any site- that’s one of those USDA regulations.
